Over an evening, experience the unbelievable underground adventure of the Gouffre de Padirac just as Édouard-Alfred Martel did in 1889, when he went down for the first time into what, at the time, was called the “Devil’s Hole”. With lamps to light your way you will you will get the fullest sense of the Gouffre, in the silence, the dark, and the cool...

You will be told of the Gouffre based on the many written documents and testimonies that Martel left us… an out-of-the-ordinary multisensory experience and a very special way of discovering the natural marvels of the site, which has never ceased to amaze us since 1889!

Édouard-Alfred Martel is the founding father of modern speleology and the discoverer of the Gouffre de Padirac. He was 30 years old when, in 1889, he decided to explore the Gouffre. The young, intuitive, and visionary explorer had already spent several months preparing for the unusual adventure: going down into one of the hidden faces of the Earth, one of the most mysterious chasms ever explored...

Using candles and hemp ropes and suspended from a cable that was 75 metres long, he went into the centre of the earth. With four exploration companions, Martel threw himself into discovering the unknown… He doubtless did not know, at the time, that the adventure would lead to one of the world’s most significant geological discoveries.

Follow in the footsteps of Édouard-Alfred Martel and experience this unforgettable journey to the centre of the earth!
